The Orari Gorge
Scenic Reserve is not, though its name suggests, at
the gorge of the Orari River. The reserve has a good
three-hour circular walk through regenerating kahikatea
(the white pine that is the country's tallest native
tree) as well as other fine native specimens (giant
totaras, rimus and ribbonwoods). There is a profusion
of small trees and shrubs, including fuchsia, kowhai,
and white flowering clematis, in this remnant of virgin
forest. Tracks give access to the cool, fern-carpeted
interior, which offers a retreat from the hot days of
summer. The circular walk takes in part of the line
of an old bush tramway. Camping. 12 km NW of Geraldine.
