| The
Visitors Centre at Peel Forest Township (PN 03 696-3826)
displays details of walks and tramps. It is advised
that you sign the intentions book when going out, especially
those tramping on Little or Big Mount Peel. The South
Canterbury foothills contrast sharply with the pine
shelterbelts of the plains. In summer days the walks
are superb, providing delightful picnic spots and a
series of walks to waterfalls. Offering excellent salmon
fishing, particularly in February and March, the Rangitata
is not recommended for swimming, however the river at
nearby Orari Gorge is quite safe. A small camping ground
is run by the park headquarters. |
