The Waihi Gorge
reserve offers independent camping and a wide grassed
area contrasting with a bushed river face and a river
that affords modest swimming. On the Sundrum property,
near the reserve, is an unusual "weeping"
Totara (ask directions at the local information center).
The route to the tree lies through Woodbury, with its
remarkable church (see St Thomas's Anglican Church).
Native trees include Totara, Matai (black pine), Kahikatea
(white pine), Konini (fuchsia), Kowhai and many varieties
of fern. Indigenous birds include the native Pigeon,
Kingfisher, numerous Bellbirds, Rifleman, Tomtits, Waxeye,
and the occasional Ground Lark, Tui and Parakeet. |
