South Canterbury is rich in cultural and historical places to visit, with no less than 3 Heritage Trails, 300 historical Maori rock art sites and several early settler museums. View the unique 1929 Spartan Biplane at the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum, or see relics of early aviation by inventor Richard Pearse (reputed to have been airborne nine months before the Wright Brothers) in the Pleasant Point Railway Museum. The region is ideal for exploring Mount Hutt, Mount Cook and the Waitaki Lakes, where "Vertical Limit" and "Lord of the Rings" were shot. Find Visitor Information Centres in Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka, or contact Central South Island Tourism. See our links page for details.
